BARLING (KFSM) -- The City of Barling is planning major upgrades to its park, which many residents use to stay in shape.

"[All this] is going to turn into a figure-eight," City Director Linda Shipley explained Tuesday (Nov. 1) as she pointed to the current quarter-mile-long trail, which the city is hoping to expand.

Recently, Barling received a $35,000 grant from Trails For Life in order to do so, but to add another quarter mile, it still needs an estimated $70,000. Shipley said the city will be reaching out to big box stores to get the rest of the funding.

"We are going to reach some of the private sectors of Walmart, maybe Home Depot, to help us achieve getting that money," Shipley said.

Shipley hopes to have the additional trail completed by this time next year. Barling City Administrator Mike Tanner also mentioned the possibility of health stations being set-up along the trail in the future, but said that plan is at least five or more years away.
