FARMINGTON (KFSM) -- A Farmington police officer was accidentally shot by an auxiliary police officer Wednesday (Nov. 2).

Sgt. Mike Wilbanks of the Farmington Police Department said Cpl. James Bertorello was at the home of the auxiliary officer when that officer went to another room to retrieve a pistol.

"[He] wanted to show Bertorello the gun," Wilbanks said. "He went into another room to get the gun and at some point the gun discharged, went through a wall and struck Betorello in the upper thigh."

Bertorello went to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Wilbanks said the investigation will continue with help from the Washington County Sheriff's Office to determine why the gun discharged and if any charges will be filed.

"Obviously accidents happen," Wilbanks said. "You don't want to see them like this, and I can tell you both of the officers have been extensively trained."
