FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- The son of fallen Sebastian County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Bill Cooper spoke to 5NEWS about his father's death Wednesday (Nov 2.).

"My dad loved what he did and he especially loved kids. Each time I would call him he would say 'son, I'm busy. I'm going to go talk to some kids,'" Scott Cooper said.

Scott Cooper is a police officer in Bokoshe; the same line of work as his dad.

"People hate cops. My dad could be one of those that could change that person's mind," Cooper said. "I've been on calls with him when I've been at work over in Arkansas and it could go from an escalated situation to he would calm it down with a handshake and a smile."

Scott Cooper said he's reminded everyday how much his father meant to his community.

"I've been a cop for several years. All I mainly see is bad, but now I've seen a lot of good in Sebastian County. Everyone supporting Arkansas. It's amazing," he said.

The suspected shooter in Cpl. Bill Cooper's death, Billy Jones, is facing numerous charges including capital murder. Recently, the Sebastian County prosecutor announced he will seek the death penalty in the case.

"Please do your job. Everybody has their job to do and I hope the justice system prevails on this one," Scott Cooper said.
