BENTON COUNTY (KFSM) -- The polls are open in Arkansas and state elections officials are expecting a high voter turnout.

Preliminary early voting numbers are higher than 2008 and 2012, according to Secretary of State Mark Martin.

State election officials said at least one-third of the state’s electorate has already voted in the 2016 general election thus far.

According to Secretary of State spokesman Chris Powell, they're projecting a 70 percent turnout for this election.

"We had a record turnout in the primary and significantly higher turnout in early voting," said Powell, "and as of Monday afternoon the total tally was 587,453."

Powell, said that he voted last Friday  night and waited a couple of hours in line, "can you believe that for a Friday night?"
