ARKANSAS (KFSM) -- Arkansas Congressman Bruce Westerman joined 5NEWS This Morning Wednesday (Nov. 9), and said he stands behind Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Paul Ryan.

Westerman, a Republican, is the U.S. Representative for Arkansas' 4th Congressional District.  He said the recent questions about whether Ryan will step down as a result of the presidential election are only rumors.

"I think Speaker Ryan wants to work on issues that are important to our country and the same issues Donald Trump was talking about in the last few weeks," said Westerman.  The Congressman said he thinks the division between Donald Trump and Paul Ryan is not as big as some would like to make it.  "I saw emails that he sent out this week, talking about Speaker Ryan, encouraging people to vote for Donald Trump," said Westerman.

Westerman won re-election for Arkansas' 4th Congressional District over Libertarian Kerry Hick on Tuesday (Nov. 8).  He has been in office since January, 2015.

Congressman  Bruce Westerman on support for Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House:

"There's been a lot of questions about whether he will step down.  I've not heard anything other than rumors about that.  Again, have to get back to D.C. and see what's going on there, but I think Speaker Ryan wants to work on issues that are important to our country and the same issues Donald Trump was talking about in the last few weeks are issues that we've been speaking about in the House and Speaker Ryan has played a big role in that.  I saw emails that he sent out this week, talking about Speaker Ryan, encouraging people to vote for Donald Trump.  So I don't think the division there is as big as some people would like to make it."
