SALLISAW (KFSM) -- Sequoyah County Sheriff-Elect Larry Lane won't take office until January 2017, but he is already making changes in the department starting with telling several employees they won't be working for his administration.

"Initially we are going to replace two deputies and three investigators," Lane said.

Lane said he notified those employees, including an office employee, that they would no longer work for the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office after Dec. 31.

"These people are my friends. I've worked with them. It's unfortunate. Like I've said, I have been on that side of the fence. The people of Sequoyah County elected me to do a job," Lane said. "I've got a plan in place and in order to get that plan in action. I have to get the right people in place."

Employees at the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office who will be losing their jobs did not want to go on camera, but they did say they were shocked to learn the news. They said they were notified through text message or a phone call.

Those same employees said they will receive their last month's check and pay for vacation time accrued.

Lane said he already has people in mind he plans to hire.

"They've got the same vision as I do, the same mentalities as I do -- treat people right, enforce the law fairly," Lane said. "They are going to be the right people for the job. I know they are."
