WALDRON (KFSM) -- A Waldron Middle School student who was picked to participate in Shop With a Cop showed her town the true meaning of the holidays.
When 12-year-old Mabel Adamson got to the checkout, she told officers she didn't want the presents for herself. Instead, Mabel chose a girl from the angel tree to shop for.
"Most kids, it's kind of hard for them to have a good Christmas," Adamson said. "Most kids now, they don't have a good Christmas like a lot of us."
Adamson was able to get clothes and toys for an 18-month-old girl.
"I got five pairs of pants, two shirts and a jacket," Adamson said. "We went and got her three toys."
Dixie Crump said she is more than proud of her daughter.
"I feel blessed because she's so self-conscious," Crump said. "She knows what she wants and if she doesn't need it, she won't get it. If she feels like someone else needs it, she will pack it up and take it to them."
Crump said she was surprised to hear what her daughter did, but in their household, they do encourage giving.
"If you have something that someone else needs and you don't need it or you don't wear it, give it to them," Crump said. "It doesn't cost any money, nothing out of our pockets, and it makes them feel better that they can have something that they really need."
Adamson's act of kindness has not only caught the eye of local officers, but everyone in town.
"It made me tear up," Waldron Police Chief David Millard said. "Shop With a Cop time of the year is really my favorite time of the year. I love doing this and when I have a child that thinks of others more than herself, it really does my heart well."
Adamson said she wants to make this a tradition each year and give back to those in need.
Millard said nearly 50 kids participated in this year's Shop With a Cop event in Waldron.
Walmart employees said the angel tree started off with more than 50 angels on the tree and as of Wednesday (Dec. 7), only five were left. The angel tree was put up and names were provided by the Department of Human Services Area Coordinator Cheryl Hunt. All presents collected will benefit local children and foster children in Scott County.
