GEORGIA (CBS NEWS) — Two Byron, Georgia, officers were shot Monday morning while serving a search warrant, officials say.
CBS Macon affiliate WMAZ-TV reports the alleged shooter was killed in the exchange in Crawford County.
Georgia Bureau of investigations Special Agent J.T. Ricketson told reporters a multi-jurisdiction drug task force knocked on the door of a home three times at around 2:30 a.m. When no one answered, they went inside, and someone in the home started firing at the officers, he said.
They returned fire and hit the person who shot at them, Ricketson said.
Both officers were taken to a hospital after suffering non-life threatening injuries. One of the officers required surgery.
Police said there was more than one person inside the home. Ricketson said the task force was working to collect weapons inside.
