Cost Of University Textbooks Rises To About $900 Per Year

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) — The University of Arkansas will be offering incentives for faculty members who help reduce the price of student textbooks, according to a university press release.

Faculty members can apply for a stipend for using or creating open educational resources, which are free or low-cost textbooks and educational materials. Members of the academic community are working together to create shared texts to lower the cost of educational materials for students.

Up to 10 stipends will be awarded for the 2017-2018 school year.

A $3,000 stipend will be awarded for select faculty who use previously published open access materials. A $7,500 stipend will be awarded to select faculty who develop their own open educational materials, which must be comprised of at least 75 percent original materials.

Faculty members can fill out an application for the stipend, which must be submitted by Feb. 15, 2017, for the Fall 2017 semester. Applications for courses in the Spring 2018 semester must be submitted by Sept. 29, 2017.

The recipients of the stipend will be chosen based on the quality and feasibility of the applications.

The stipends are offered through a partnership between the University of Arkansas Global Campus and University Libraries.
