Arkansas QB Cole Kelley Arrested On Suspicion Of DWI; Local Reaction

Around 4 a.m., Fayetteville police saw a black Toyota Tundra heading west on Wedington and Steamboat where the passenger side tires hit the curb, and a traffic stop was made at Wedington and Colorado.   The truck pulled into a Taco Bell and the officer made contact with the driver, who was then identified at Cole Kelley, according to a preliminary police report.

Kelley was asked to get out of the vehicle and perform a sobriety test and the officer noticed Kelley’s eyes were red and watery. Because of a brace on his right foot he was not asked to walk and turn, according to the report.  He refused a breathalyzer test and said his parents told him not to provide a sample for a test unless he was required to do so.  At that point, Kelley was arrested for driving while intoxicated and taken to Washington County Detention Center (WCDC).   Upon arrival another officer read Kelley the Arkansas statement of rights form and he signed it.  Kelley was later asked to provide a urine sample and he agreed to do so, the report states.

According to the WCDC website, Kelley’s first court hearing is Monday (Nov. 13).  His bond was set at $935, which he posted, and he was released at 11: 46 a.m.

Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema issued the following statement:

“I was informed early this morning of an incident involving Cole Kelley. We are gathering all information from the proper authorities and will make a determination upon review of that information.”

Kelley completed 3-of-10 passes for 36 yards and an interception in Saturday’s loss at LSU as he entered the game midway through the fourth quarter.

5NEWS asked for reaction from people about the arrest, here are their responses:

Kevin Layes said, “No disciplinary actions are happening…with Kelly, I mean nothing is going on with him right now…they haven’t said anything about him being suspended.”

“You’re given a chance to fill in for Brandon Allen … and then you and get a  DWI, that just doesn’t look very good on you,” said Terren Mayberry.

“It’s not good for the team,” said Joseph Winn, “and it’s not good for the university.”

Lastly, Donald Hunter heard about the arrest, “I don’t know … I got no response about how they’re going this year, they suck.”
