WASHINGTON COUNTY (KFSM) — Interstate 49 southbound lanes from the Crawford and Washington county line to the Bobby Hopper Tunnel were closed Saturday night (Dec.9) due to an accident, according to Arkansas State Police.
In all, a bit more than one mile of the interstate was closed causing traffic to back up for miles.
Arkansas State Police investigators said they received a call at 8:38 p.m. of a car vs. pedestrian near mile marker 38.
Investigators said the call was originally thought to be that of a minor accident but after arriving Troopers determined a man owning a tow truck was injured.
Investigators said the man, who they have not identified at this time, was changing a tire on a disabled car.
They said the tow truck owners own vehicle malfunctioned and rolled back, pinning him between the truck and the car he was working on.
The southbound lane as shut down while a Medical helicopter landed to transport the man to Washington Regional Medical Center.
Troopers said the man is in critical condition at this time.
The highway was reopened at 10:31 p.m.
