FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- Fayetteville police need help identifying two subjects accused of stealing checks from mailboxes.

Police said the suspects are accused of stealing two checks from mailboxes in Fayetteville and spending the money at Walmart.

One suspect appears to be a woman, wearing a black coat, black hat and black jeans. The other suspect is a man, wearing a gray jacket, blue jeans, and a black and tan hat.

“If someone doesn`t see someone going mailbox to mailbox taking mail, people usually find out when they get a transaction report from their bank and they say this check that was supposed to be used for utilities was used at Walmart,” Anthony Murphy said.

Sargenat Anthony Murphy said that is what happened in this case. He said the personal check was likely washed and rewritten out to Walmart.

“If you have a bill or something that has personal information on it that you are mailing, drop it in a mailbox. Take it to the post office to one of the old blue boxes,” he said.

That way no one else can get their hands on your mail and he said to think of the red flag on your mailbox as something that attracts criminals.

“You know if they are going around breaking into cars if they say your door lock is up. It`s an indicator that they can get in there easy..same with the mailbox, if you`re red flag is up they know there is probably a check in there going to pay for some bills.”
