FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- Crews said a home is a total loss after a house fire in Fort Smith Monday evening (Jan. 29).

Firefighters were called to the home on Thomas Road, just off Highway 71 about 7 p.m.

The battalion chief said the original call was for smoke, but once firefighters arrived, they had to call for more help because the fire was so large.

5NEWS spoke to the homeowner who said no one was inside the home at the time of the fire.

Greenwood Mayor, Doug Kinslow, told 5NEWS that the home belongs to the son of Greenwood City Council member A.C. Brown.

Neighbors said they rushed to help after they walked outside to see the flames.

"We came outside and saw the flames," neighbor Katelyn Sanders said. "My boyfriend and my little brother jumped the fence to see if anybody was in the house, and the flames were so bad that we were spraying our fence with the water hose."

The homeowner said at this time he does not know how the fire may have started. Officials said the fire marshal will be out on Tuesday (Jan. 30) to investigate the cause of the fire.
