  • Skateboarders Raise Money To Fight Crohn’s Disease

    FORT SMITH (KFSM) –  Local skateboarders competed in an event this weekend to help raise money to fight Crohn’s disease. The event was held at the Chaffee Crossing Lookout Trails on Sunday (Aug. 31). The competition was open to skaters of all ages, styles and skill levels.  It featured live vendors, door prizes and food for all those in attendance. Proceeds from the event benefit Stubbs Freeman, who was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease.

    Fort Smith, Ark.- The Fort Smith Museum of History helped visitors celebrate what is known as the last weekend of summer. The museum held its Annual Ice Cream Social.  The event is held on the Sunday before Labor Day each year. Attendees paid $5 and were able to build their own sundaes from a variety of ice cream flavors and toppings.  The event also acts as a fundraiser for the museum.     Fort Smith Two Vehicle Accident

    (Fort Smith, Ark.)- A two vehicle accident is slowing traffic in the Fort Smith area near Grand Avenue and 32nd Street. The Fort Smith Police Department, Fire Department and EMS are helping with the accident. Witnesses say a woman driving a white Mercury Grand Marquee ran a stop light and hit a white GMC Safari around 6:08 p.m. The woman is being transported by ambulance to Sparks Hospital.     Deadly Collision in Pocola

    (Pocola, Okla.) – The Pocola Police Department responded to a car accident on Highway 112 this morning. Police report the call came in around 2:50 a.m.  Pocola Police Chief Steve Howard said a Dodge Caravan drifted into oncoming traffic causing a near head on collision with a Chevolet Blazer.     Inmate Is Captured After Escaping From Work-Release Program In Springdale

    SPRINGDALE (KFSM) – Authorities caught a prison inmate they said escaped from a work release program Friday night (Aug. 16) in Springdale. Clayton Shatswell, 30, walked away around 8:50 p.m. from the location he was working at for the Arkansas Department of Correction, according to the prison agency. He is serving a 10-year, 1-month sentence in a forgery case out of Benton County, according to the Department of Correction.     Off-Duty Deputy Involved In Fort Smith Shooting Identified

    FORT SMITH (KFSM) – An off-duty sheriff’s deputy who killed a man in Fort Smith on Saturday (Aug. 9) during a shootout has been identified, authorities say. The deputy was identified as Joshua Heidelberg, according to a news release. Justin Higgins, 23, was killed about 5:15 p.m. after being involved in a domestic dispute at 35 Aberdeen Circle, police said.     Street Closures in Bentonville Next Week

    The Bentonville Street Department annouced Thursday (Aug.7) the city of would face some road closures due to utility construction. The department said Northeast A St. from Northeast 7th to Park will be closed to through traffic.  The area will be closed from Monday August 11 at 9 a.m to Wednesday August 13 at 5 p.m. Officials said weather or unforeseen circumstances could cause delays in work or rescheduling of the utility constuction.

    The water system in Winslow, Ark., has issued a boil order due to a water main being struck by lightning today (Aug. 9).     VAN BUREN (KFSM) – The Van Buren Lawbreakers and Peacemakers held a reenactment Saturday morning (August 2) on Mainstreet. The city council of Van Buren agreed in their meeting last week to shut down a portion of the street for this show and the upcoming show for August 23. The reenactment is part of a city initive to revitalize the downtown area.    


    Man Arrested in Connection with Poteau Pipe Bomb Scare

    The Choctaw Travel Plaza gas station and convenience store was put on lockdown around 3:00 p.m. Sunday (August 3). According to LeFlore County Dispatchers, as of 1:00 a.m. Monday (August 4) the convenience store was reopened. LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale said they arrested a man on unrelated charges while he was getting gas. When impound police searched his vehicle, they found the suspicious device. The store is holding its Teacher Appreciation Event until August 3.  Teachers enrolled in the Staples Teacher  Rewards program will recieve the coupon. The discount is good for purchases of $10 or more. Teachers who are not current members can sign up for the rewards program at any Staples and receive the savings in Fort Smith.
