Everyone expected a nail biter between Northside and Springdale in the 7A boys soccer championship.

That’s exactly what the largest crowd in Razorback Stadium got Friday night.

The two powers went scoreless through regulation and a pair of extra periods but it was the Grizzlies who prevailed in penalty kicks to claim the crown.

Northside outscored Springdale 4-2 in penalty kicks to win the program’s first ever championship.

Both teams had plenty of chances in regulation but key stops and missed opportunities stole the show.

The Grizzlies (26-1) scored on all four attempts in the penalty portion of the match and took home the trophy when Springdale’s fourth attempt bounced off the crossbar.

Springdale defeated Little Rock Catholic in last season’s state championship mate.

Dynasty can be the only word to describe it. Bentonville girls soccer has now won four 7A State Championships in the last five years after Friday’s 2-1 win over Mt. St. Mary’s at Razorback Field.

“It’s our senior year and people didn’t think we were all we really were,” said Tayler Estrada. “People thought we were overrated so then we just showed them we aren’t overrated.”

Throughout the tournament Bentonville proved they weren’t overrated. They cruised through the bracket winning their three games be a combined score of 13-4.

The Lady Tigers opened the scoring early in the title bout. Annea Hellgren scored less than three minutes in. Dyann Shade made it 2-0 just five minutes later.

Mt. St. Mary’s did close the gap to 2-1 midway through the first half but never really threatened again.

“We played with emotion on this game and it was a crazy game just a bunch of emotion,” said junior Dyann Shade. ” We stuck just stuck it out.”

Shade also picked up tournament MVP honors for the Lady Tigers.

What started off as a noise complaint has now turned in to a federal police brutality lawsuit between a Clarksville woman and the city’s police department.

Jacqueline Hennick filed the federal lawsuit after she claims a patrolman threw her to the ground and beat her outside her home on South Elm Street. The trial date is now set for Sept. 30.

The problem began in 2011 in response to constant loud music in the neighborhood, Hennick said. One night, she used her car to block off the road to offenders until police could arrive.

“When the officer finally got here he made me the problem,” Hennick said. “The problem was my car was blocking the street.

“He said he would move my car and I said, ‘No, I’ll move my car,’” Hennick said. “As I walked towards my car he picked me up from behind, picked me up off my feet and slammed me down head first in to the pavement.”

Hennick, a 95-pound disabled woman, said the pain was so intense all she could do was scream as she said the officer repeatedly beat her head into the ground.

“I watched all of that happen right in front of me and I couldn’t do anything about it,” Randy Knecht, an eyewitness, said. “He was a police officer. I couldn’t get involved. I couldn’t step in and help her. I would’ve been arrested myself.”

In written statements filed by Officer Jeb Clark, he said he grabbed her because she was trying to make a run for her car.

Clark can be heard in the video expressing frustration toward Hennick, saying he’d had a tough day.

That night, Hennick was taken to the Johnson County Detention Center where she spent four hours behind bars on suspicion of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Hennick said deputies also threatened to charge her with terroristic threatening after she said she would take care of the problem herself next time.

The officer did file paperwork Friday (May 17) asking for a summary judgement in the federal lawsuit against Clark . If a judge decides to go that route, the trial would not happen. Instead, a judge would look at arguments presented by each side on paper and make a final ruling from there.

Ryne Stanek has been great all season long.

Whatever is better than great, that’s what the right-hander has been in SEC games.

Stanek threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings to guide Arkansas to a 1-0 at Auburn.

Arkansas has scored just one run in two games but has a chance to win the series tomorrow.

Stanek lowered his season ERA to 1.54 en route to picked up his eighth win of the year. But, more impressively, he lowered his SEC ERA to 0.97 in 65 innings of work. Stanek has allowed just seven earned runs in league play.

Dominic Ficociello drove in the only run of the game in the third inning on a RBI single.

The win also secures the No. 3 seed in next week’s SEC tournament for the Razorbacks.

The Lavaca Golden Arrow Softball team fell just short of winning the 3A State Title Friday afternoon at Bogle Park. The team fought a hard battle but in the end lost 2-1 to Harmony Grove.

“This is what I wanted forever and not getting it is really hard,” said Lavaca senior Haley Brown. “There are no other group of girls I would have rather spent my senior year with. I love those girls they are like my sisters.”

The first five innings of play were scoreless, with both pitchers having outstanding games. Lavaca got on the board first with a RBI single from junior Erica Schuster in the top of the 6th inning.

In the bottom of the 6th Harmony Grove responded with two runs of their own. That is all they would need as they went on to win the game 2-1.

Arkansas scored a pair of runs in each of the first and second innings en route to a 5-1 win against Fordham in the opening round of the Norman Regional.

The Razorbacks (35-18) got a pair of RBI from Clarisa Navarro while Kimmy Beasley pitched a complete game to pick up her 11th win of the season.

“It’s great to get that first win,” Arkansas coach Mike Larabee said. “We were anxious to get going, I thought we played a solid game. Our defense was great today and I thought we did a great job of communicating on defense.”

Beasley struck out eight, walked two and gave up six hits.

“Kimmy did a great job,” Larabee said. “In our program we talk about being great in the circle and playing championship defense. We did that tonight and got timely hits. We have been fortunate to have a good pitching staff all year.”

Arkansas got RBI from both Devon Wallaca and Stephanie Canfield.

“Stephanie really had a nice day at the plate,” Larabee said. “She had three big hits tonight and manufactured some runs. Devon getting on base is really important, she is a catalyst for us. It was nice to see her get to swing the bat.”

The Razorbacks will face the winner of the Oklahoma-Marist game which is currently underway.

The second day of the NCAA regional at Blessings Country Club was a good one for the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Arkansas began the day eight strokes off the lead but a team total of 5-under on Friday vaulted the Razorbacks to the top of the leaderboard.

Illinois shot a 4-over 292 on Friday but falls to 2-under for the tournament, one stroke back of Arkansas.

Arkansas’ Austin Cook is also in the hunt for the individual title as his 4-under 68 Friday puts him in a tie for the lead. Cook shares the lead with SMU’s Mario Clemens and Stephen F. Austin’s Mitchell McLeroy. Taylor Moore and Sebastian Cappelen are both in the top 11 for the Razorbacks.

Only five teams advance to the championship round, eliminating nine other schools.

The past three seasons of Siloam Springs soccer is what every high school senior dreams of.

The Panthers won back-to-back championships and found themselves in a third straight title game.

But Searcy ended the dream run when they found the net in the first extra period to claim a 3-2 win in the 6A state championship at Razorback Field.

Siloam Springs led 2-0 on a pair of goals from Aguirre Abraham but Searcy scored twice in a three minute span to tie the game in the second half.

The Fayetteville seniors have gotten the monkey off their backs. The Purple Dogs are the 2013 7A Baseball State Champions after a 6-3 win over Rogers Friday at Baum Stadium.

The program won four straight state titles from 2006-2009, but no one on the current team knew what it felt like to hoist a trophy, until now.

Pitcher Kyle Pate was named the tournament MVP and earned the save, coming in for starter Andy Pagnozzi in the sixth inning.

“It’s indescribable,” said Pate. “I’m so pumped and so happy we got that win. I can’t even describe it.”

Fayetteville got on the board first in the second inning with a solo home run by Brett Price. They added to that lead in the fourth inning when Price drove in a run with a triple.

Fayetteville took a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning, but that’s when Rogers made it interesting.

After two quick runs with the bases loaded, Konstantin Storkov doubled to bring in another run, cutting the lead to 4-3.

But Fayetteville quickly silenced the Mounties’ rally with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-3.

“This has been my dream my whole life,” said senior Brett Price. “To come out here and play well, it’s just a dream come true. I’m so excited right now. Just all of my guys out here, it’s a dream come true and I couldn’t ask for anything better to share with all these guys.”

Rogers came into the game the underdog having lost to Fayetteville twice in the regular season. The Mounties beat defending State Champion Byant and No. 1 seed North Little Rock by a combined 21-2 to make it to the title game.

“I’m just proud of my team, how we worked together,” said Konstantin Storkov. “I don’t like that we lost but I like how long we worked in this tournament.”

This is the seventh overall State Championship for Fayetteville and the sixth in the last 10 years.

Nearly 300 Darby Junior High girls got the chance to meet local female business leaders at the Zonta Club of Fort Smith’s annual career fair Friday afternoon (May 17).

The girls, grades 7-9, discussed career and college options with representatives from 50 local businesses and colleges in the school’s gym for about three hours.

Our own morning anchor Heather Lewis was there, along with representatives of the Fort Smith Police, MovieLounge chef Blythe Beck, female construction workers, and even a pet groomer.

Organizers hope they can be a positive influence on the girls at an early age.

“We hope we can reach some of the girls and plant the idea that they need to stay in school, make a plan, think about a career and work toward that goal,” said Cathy Williams with the Zonta Club of Fort Smith.

Zonta Club of Fort Smith is an international organization of executives and professionals who work to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. They host events like this every year either at Darby or Kimmons Jr. High, according to Williams. They also award scholarships to local girls.

A Washington County murder suspect trying to get out of jail was denied bond Friday by a Circuit Court judge.

Heather Swain, 35, of Prairie Grove, filed a motion for a new bond hearing to get out of jail, but was denied bond by Judge William Storey. Swain remains in the Washington County Detention Center without bond, according to Storey’s office.

The bond hearing comes while Swain tries to separate herself from her fellow murder suspects in the beating death of a Prairie Grove man in December. Bill James, Swain’s attorney, filed a motion in Washington County Circuit Court claiming that the suspect’s appearance with the other murder suspects hurts her chances at a legally-required fair trial. The motion also claims statements implicating Swain—made by the other murder suspects—are inadmissible in court.

Swain, James Patton, Anthony Swinford and Timothy Swinford are scheduled to stand trial on charges of capital murder Aug. 19 in Storey’s Circuit Court courtroom. The trial was originally set to start April 2.

The four suspects pleaded not guilty at their arraignment in the Washington County Detention Center in January. They remain in jail without bond.

Ronnie Lee Bradley, a Prairie Grove resident described by neighbors as disabled, was beaten to death while the suspects took turns driving and punching and choking him, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office. Bradley lived on Cleveland Street in Prairie Grove. The car in his driveway has a license plate for disabled drivers.

Bradley told the suspects several times during the beating, “Please take me home,” the report states.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 27 of a male in the unpaved driveway of a chicken farm at 17409 Four Corner Road. Responders determined the body was Bradley, and he was declared dead at the scene.

Deputies received information that Anthony Swinford may be involved in the suspected murder. In an interview later with authorities, Anthony Swinford said he beat the victim and left him in the driveway. He also implicated Swain, Patton and Timothy Swinford as accomplices, a report states.

Anthony Swinford also rode along with investigators and pointed out the incident locations, according to a preliminary report.

Swain cleaned up the evidence after the suspects dropped Bradley off in a driveway, a report states. She also faces a charge of tampering with evidence.

Investigators recovered bloody clothing and the vehicle used in the crime, according to the preliminary report. The suspects had marks on them that suggested they were involved in an altercation, a report states.

Three of the four suspects admitted to taking part in the beating, deputies said. Their admissions were backed up by witness statements, video evidence and physical evidence taken from the vehicle and the suspects’ homes, a report states.

Swain and Patton live in the same home. Anthony and Timothy Swinford are also roommates.

The suspected murder comes fewer than two weeks after Patton was arrested by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of third-degree domestic battery. He was also arrested and convicted of domestic battery in 2008 and a previous charge of assault on a family member.

All the suspects have a criminal history. Swain has previously been arrested in connection with domestic battery, possession of a controlled substance and driving while intoxicated. Anthony Swinford has a criminal history that includes charges of aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance, domestic battery, breaking and entering, theft, commercial burglary, terroristic threatening and violation of a protection order. Timothy Swinford’s history includes arrests on suspicion of domestic battery, endangering the welfare of a minor and driving while intoxicated.

A Springdale man charged with murder in the death of his infant stepson has been sentenced to six years in prison after reaching a plea deal with Washington County prosecutors, according to the county prosecutor’s office.

Tremelle Deshun Overton, 23, was arrested Aug. 1 after his two-month-old stepson was found not breathing, Springdale police said. He was subsequently charged with murder and placed in the Washington County Detention Center on $100,000 bond.

A report by the state medical examiner later found there was no medical evidence to suggest the baby was smothered. Without evidence against Overton, prosecutors decided to make a plea deal with Overton, according to the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

Overton pleaded guilty to felony endangering the welfare of a child and was sentenced to six years in prison, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The murder suspect’s trial was set to begin Jan. 28 but was delayed several times, according to court records.

Overton and the boy’s mother, Ashley Overton, initially told police the baby was in his bed and just stopped breathing, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

Later, when the mother was alone with police, she admitted there was more, the report states.

The mother said Overton was watching the child while she slept. When she woke, she found the baby strangely wrapped in a blanket in its crib. The blanket was wrapped tightly around the child’s head from the neck up, and had been folded and tucked underneath him, the report states.

The mother said she frantically unwrapped the child. He wasn’t breathing, according to the report.

She immediately called 911.

Overton was on parole at the time for beating Ashley Overton while she was pregnant with the boy, according to the preliminary report. The couple had an argument the night before the baby’s death, and she told Overton she was going to leave him, according to the report.

A multi-vehicle pile-up on Interstate 540 sent three people to the hospital shortly Friday afternoon (May 17).

A motorcycle ran into the back of a car when traffic stopped abruptly on the interstate just south of the Kelley Highway exit, according to Arkansas State Police troopers. The biker then ran into a barrier wall.

The biker, identified as 55-year-old Melvin Sullivan, of Van Buren, was hospitalized with a broken arm and head injury.

As traffic came to a stop for the first wreck, a car hit a pickup truck pushing it into another pickup.

Two people involved in that accident were taken to the hospital where they were treated and released.

Trooper Callie Dacus says these wrecks, in a busy construction zone, could have easily been avoided.

“Especially in the construction zone, get off the phone, no texting,” she said. “Pay attention, make sure you have enough distance, that’s the biggest thing you go hundreds of feet per second whenever you’re driving.”

The south bound lane of I-540 coming into Fort Smith was shut down for a brief time until the wreckage could be cleared.

The two University of Arkansas students who were killed in an Oklahoma boat crash earlier this week died from blunt force trauma, according to findings just released by the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office.

An examiner’s report states William “Trey” Varner III died of accidental blunt force trauma to the head, while Rachel Swetnam was killed by accidental blunt force trauma to the head and neck.

Meanwhile, a memorial service for the two students who were killed has been set for Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Union Verizon Ballroom, officials said.

Investigators believe alcohol may be a contributing factor in the wreck, although toxicology results from Varner and Swetnam will not be available for two to four months, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Varner, of Texarkana, Ark., and Swetnam, of Grove, Okla., were killed when a 22-foot Cobalt ski boat carrying eight people collided with a large empty houseboat docked in a marina at Arrowhead Yacht Club in the Duck Creek arm of Grand Lake near Grove, Okla.

The accident happened at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Others in the boat included the driver, John Deselms, of Tulsa, along with Taylor Perry, of Springdale, Eugene DeVerges, Bryce Banham, both of Tulsa, Taylor Reynolds of Plano, Tx., and Chad Scott of Perry, Okla.

Deselms and Perry were transported to Craig General Hospital for treatment and later released. Some of those in the boat were students at the University of Arkansas, according to the university.

Swetnam, a Tri Delta sorority member, was set to graduate in apparel studies from the UA next year.

“Rachel is someone that we`re really going to miss, she`s actually the first person I threw up the Delta with, a really sweet girl, we`re really going to miss her,” said Cassie Murphy, Tri Delta member.

“She was actually going to live in LA this summer and intern up there because she`s a fashion design major,” said Sara, Tri Delta member.

Varner was studying marketing and a fraternity member at Kappa Sigma.

“He could definitely light up a room, just by being with them. Rachel and him were really good friends,” said Murphy.

Emergency 911 calls released Wednesday by authorities provided new details on the tragedy.

The calls came in from other boaters who witnessed the crash.

Below are excerpts from the 911 calls:

Caller: “There are eight people. Gosh, there’s blood everywhere. People are sitting on the dock. Two of them are lying on the dock, blood everywhere. Two on the dock are alive.”

2nd Caller: “We got a marjor accident at Arrowhead. Major, major wreck, okay?”
911: “Okay, injuries?”
Caller: “Yeah, big time.”

3rd Caller: “People are hurt, possibly two fatalities. A boat ran into, its inside the other boat, the whole boat is inside the other boat.”

4th Caller: “A boat just an into the dock 40-50 miles per hour. There were about six people in it.”

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, but believe speeding and alcohol were factors.

“We continued processing the scene and were able to remove the Cobalt vessel from the scene,” said Police Chief Bryan Edwards of the Grand River Dam Authority.

Officials are determining whether to seek charges against the driver of the boat, identified by authorities as DeSelms, a UA student.

(CNN) — The multi-state Powerball jackpot has risen to $600 million, with a cash value of $376.9 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.

The jackpot marks the second-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, after no one matched the winning numbers in Wednesday night’s draw.

Wednesday’s jackpot in the multistate lottery was $360 million. The numbers were 2, 11, 26, 34 and 41 with a Powerball of 32.

Saturday’s jackpot will be the largest in the history of the Powerball game, surpassing a $587.6 million jackpot that was split by winners in Arizona and Missouri in November.

The largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history was $656 million in the Mega Millions game in March 2012. That was split by three tickets sold in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

That mark will be dwarfed if no one wins the Powerball jackpot Saturday. If that happens, the jackpot will be about $925 million for Wednesday’s drawing, according to Kelly Cripe, spokeswoman for the Texas Lottery, which currently holds the rotating leadership post of the multistate group that runs Powerball.

The Powerball game is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A single ticket costs $2, and the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510.

And if that’s a little too pricey for you, a Mega Millions ticket will cost you only $1. The jackpot for Friday’s Mega Millions drawing will be at least $190 million, and the odds are almost the same, 1 in 175,711,536. Mega Millions is played in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Jackpots in both games are based on payouts as annuities over 30 years. Players can choose a cash payout that will be less.

But before you start dreaming of that mansion in Barbados, allow us to pour an icy bucket of mathematical reality over your head: You almost certainly aren’t going to win.

You stand a better chance of walking onto the golf course and hitting two consecutive holes in one than winning that jackpot.

Here are a few unlikely scenarios that, we’re sorry to say, are much more likely than you taking home this jackpot.

From the Harvard School of Public Health:

– Dying from a bee sting: 1 in 6.1 million.

– Dying from a lightning strike: 1 in 3 million.

From U.S. Hole in One, which insures golf prizes for holes in one:

– A golfer hitting a hole in one on consecutive par-3 holes: 1 in about 156 million.

From a 2011 State Farm study on collisions between vehicles and deer:

– Hitting a deer with a vehicle in Hawaii, the state where State Farm says deer-vehicle collisions are least likely: 1 in 6,267.

From the National Weather Service:

– Being struck by lightning over an 80-year lifetime: 1 in 10,000.

From the Florida Museum of Natural History, based on U.S. beach injury statistics:

– Drowning and other beach-related fatalities: 1 in 2 million.

– Being attacked by a shark: 1 in 11.5 million.

That being said, some folks do snatch a jackpot from the jaws of improbability, one of them being Geneva, Illinois, resident Ricardo Cereza.

Cereza recently yanked some old lottery tickets out of a cookie jar at his house. One of them turned out to be an Illinois Lottery ticket worth $4.8 million, CNN affiliate WGN reported.

“When I realized we had all six numbers, it was that shocking moment of, ‘whoa, can this really be?’” Cereza told the station.

“So I called my son over and asked him to double-check this, and he looks it through and goes, ‘Yep, looks like a winner,’” Cereza said.

The family will use the winnings to pay off the mortgage on their home, which was facing foreclosure, according to WGN.
