A plea for a sales tax increase to fix Tontitown streets was voted down in a special election Tuesday, with 64% of the vote Tuesday. City leaders asked for a one percent sales tax hike.

Washington County election officials tell 5NEWS there was an extremely low voter turnout at just 15%, meaning only 221 residents cast votes. They said that is typical for elections like this.

Lincoln voters approve a one percent sales tax to double the size of their city library, 79% for and 21% against.
Two tax increases were on the ballot, having the potential to bring the town of Lincoln $200,000 every year, more than half would pay for improvements to the city library.

The other measure receiving approval 78% to 22% from Lincoln voters was a five-eighths cent to pay off construction loans. That tax will expire once financing is paid off.

It came down to 237 voters to make the decision, according to election officials. That’s only a 19% voter turnout.
