An Avoca family loses their mobile home and youngest daughter in a fire Friday night.
The family now deals with more than the loss of possessions, they work through the loss of their youngest daughter, Elena Martinez.
Neighbor Adam Watkins says Elena would have turned four this August.
"Right about six o'clock, I heard a poof. I looked over and saw that the corner of the back shed was on fire," said Watkins.
Then, Watkins noticed the back end of the trailer was also on fire.
"I grabbed my two little boys and the oldest girl that they had and took them over to my house."
Watkins' wife called 911 at 6:02 and then again around 6:12. He says it took first responders more than twenty minutes to arrive but the trailer was already engulfed in flames.
According to Watkins, little Elena was outside playing when she ran inside to alert her family of the fire. She then ran into a back bedroom closet to hide. Elena did not make it out alive and sadly, the story does not end there.
"Danny, their oldest boy, he's been struggling with renal failure, and he's on dialysis and the family was really trying to make it," said Watkins. "I know that Maria was always making tamales and stuff to sell to pull money together to buy the dialysis equipment."
Danny is in need of a kidney transplant. He lost his dialysis machine and medication in the fire. Watkins says Danny did not handle the fire well, he was transported to a local hospital Friday night because of kidney issues.
Indian Hills Property Owners Association Secretary, Darrell Weaber, says the Martinez family does not have homeowners insurance. Their trailer is paid off but their land is not.
Daniel and all four of his children were home at the time of the fire. The mother, Maria, was reportedly not home.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
At this time, the Martinez family is staying with relatives.
Monday morning, funds will be set up at Arvest Bank to help the Martinez family get back on their feet.
