A Greenwood home was destroyed by fire early Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the house on Church of Christ Lane near Highway 71, just outside the Greenwood city limits, around 5 a.m.  Firefighters say the home is a total loss.

“By the time we got on the scene it was pretty well three quarters fully involved,” said Captain Colby Graham, with the Greenwood Rural Fire Department.

Crews were still on the scene Monday afternoon hours after the call came in. “Putting water on hot spots,” said Capt. Graham, “Trying to keep it from rekindling back tonight.”

No one was at home at the time of the fire and none of the firefighters were injured while fighting the flames. Capt. Graham says someone driving by saw the flames and called it in.

Crews are not sure how the fire started, but believe it sparked around the entryway of the home. “It’s sad to see somebody’s home just go up in flames,” said Capt. Graham.

Firefighters say the couple who lives at the home is out of town.

The Greenwood Rural Fire Department fought the fire along with assistance from the Greenwood Fire Department, Huntington Fire Department and E.M.P Fire Department.
