A good Samaritan was sent to the hospital Monday after he being hit by a car while trying to help another driver involved in an accident.

Arkansas State Police say Phillip Stickney got out of his vehicle to help the driver of a car that crashed into the median on the southbound ramp of Interstate 540 near Winslow. He was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Central EMS took Stickney to the Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville in serious condition. But officials say he was later transferred to a Springfield, Mo., hospital trauma center in critical condition.

Arkansas State Police worked 16 vehicle accidents in Northwest Arkansas during the rainy morning commute.  Six of them involved injuries.

On I-540 near exit 47, a red Honda ran off the road in the southbound lane. But police say no one was hurt.

About 20 twenty miles north, at exit 67, two crashes in that area made for a slow ride to work. There was a two vehicle crash with no injuries, and a van involved in a one car crash, with injuries.

In Benton County, this truck rolled over near the Promenade Exit. The Rogers Fire Department had to break the windshield to get the man out, but he was not taken to the hospital, officials on the scene said.

State police say it’s common to see accidents on the interstate when it rains. But they say to see 16 in the area in such a short amount of time is definitely not the norm.
