The second day of the Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G got underway Saturday and spectators now have their beat-the-heat routines figured out.
"I'm trying to drink a lot of water and stay in the shade and I've limited not walking around, following the players, to getting in one place and just watching them from there,” said Jerry Mitchell, a spectator who is the Area Agency on Aging director in Harrison. “I’m making sure I try to stay in the shade."
Debby Squires traveled all the way from Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the tournament and the heat just didn't seem to affect her.
"I go to six to eight tournaments a year, so this is old hat for me," Squires said.
A breezy day provided some relief, but many spectators claimed their spot under large trees.
Suzanne Spillman drove overnight from Carvell, Texas.
"This is our third time here and every year we choose this particular spot because it's cool," said Spillman.
Even with temperatures hitting the triple digits Saturday, the golf course was still packed with spectators who wouldn't let the heat keep them from the game.
"Because I go to a lot of the tournaments, I've made friends with some of the players, I've made friends with a lot of the caddies,” said Squires. “So, it's sort of like a big family. They get tickets for me, they're very nice to me. So, it's just a lot of fun to come out and see the girls play."
Free water and cooling rags, provided by Walmart, are available out on the course.
The LPGA tournament wraps up Sunday evening.
