A grass fire cut a fireworks show short Wednesday night at Tenkiller State Park.  The fireworks show started around 9 p.m. Wednesday night, but according to eyewitnesses at Lake Tenkiller, a grass fire sparked from fireworks causing the fireworks to be shutdown early.

5NEWS Viewer Becky Cain says the show ended abruptly after about 3-5 minutes of fireworks.  Other eyewitnesses say a rocket firework turned on its side igniting the hill where the fireworks were being shot from.

5NEWS spoke to a park ranger for Lake Tenkiller State Park.  He said he could not comment on exactly what sparked the fire, but said they are considering having a fireworks show on Labor Day since the show ended early.

Vian Police were also unable to comment on what sparked the incident, but said both the Vian and Blackgum Fire Departments responded to the fires Wednesday night.

According to dispatchers with Vian, the fire was contained in approximately 30 minutes.

If Lake Tenkiller lights the fireworks again no Labor Day they won’t be alone, the cities of Fayetteville and Springdale are both planning on having a “make-up day” for residents to shoot off fireworks on that day.

Labor Day is Monday, September 3.
