Ozark Man Dies While Swimming in Quarry

Leonard Gates, 63, of Ozark died Saturday while swimming with friends in a private rock quarry on County Road 2171, according to the Johnson County Sheriff.

Eyewitnesses told the sheriff Gates was swimming when he went under water. He was pulled above water before an eyewitness began giving him CPR.

Gates was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Ricky Harp. At this time it is not known if Gates drowned or if he died from a medical condition.

His body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to determine the cause of death.
