Last year, the United Way of Northwest Arkansas was able to raise more than 100,000 school supply items. The United Way of Fort Smith, which serves Crawford, Franklin, Logan, Sebastian, LeFlore and Sequoyah counties, gathered 38,000 packages of new school supplies to distribute to 24 school districts and partnering agencies.

To kick things off in Northwest Arkansas, Walmart will donate 4,000 backpacks to the United Way and the Samaritan Community Center on Thursday. The backpacks will be stuffed with supplies and distributed at the center to kids from Rogers, Springdale and Gravette. Any remaining supplies will go to 11 local school districts, according to the United Way.
