Stores Stock Up for Tax Free Weekend

Oklahoma’s Tax Free Weekend kicks off at Midnight Friday and on Saturday in Arkansas.

Oklahoma’s Tax Free Weekend kicks off at midnight Friday, and in Arkansas it begins on Saturday.

“We’re filling the floor. We’re trying to get everything in stock and prepped so that we have everything that people need,” said Anne Cohen, a human resources manager at Target.

Target plans to have extra staff on hand for the tax free holiday. Shoppers will not pay state or local sales tax on back-to-school items. “We do have back stock of all of our items. [But] it is first come, first serve,” said Cohen.

All clothing under $100 is tax free. Clothing accessories and cosmetics under $50 are also tax free, along with school supplies, art supplies and textbooks. “A lot of people come in with the conception that everything is tax free for the tax free holiday. They really don’t understand that it’s for back-to-school items only,” said Chance Malone, a manager at Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Shoppers still have to pay taxes on athletic equipment, such as cleats and shoulder pads.

Stores say bring your shopping list this weekend and expect a crowd. The tax free weekend ends Sunday at midnight in Oklahoma and Arkansas.
