Strong Wind Rips Roof Off, Snaps Trees in LeFlore County

Strong storms ripped through LeFlore County Wednesday night knocking out power and snapping trees.

Strong storms ripped through LeFlore County Wednesday night knocking out power and snapping trees.

“It sounded horrible. I just knew the world was coming to an end,” said Jerry Hopkins, Sr., a storm victim.

Strong wind ripped the metal roof off a home in Shady Point. “All this stuff that you see laying around out here used to be on my house,” said Hopkins.

Hopkins and his wife were inside when he says their mobile home started to shake. He said, “The only thing I could think of was, oh God help us cause I knew we was gone.”

LeFlore County Emergency Management measured wind speeds close to 75 miles per hour. Powerful gusts knocked over signs and left a power pole in Poteau sagging.

“We didn’t have any electricity. Couldn’t open my garage door,” said Georgia Kerbow, a storm victim.

Kerbow’s church cancelled service Wednesday night because of the power outage. The storm snapped a tree in her yard and scattered debris. “The wind, I thought my trees were gonna bend over double,” said Kerbow.

Cleanup is already underway, but for the Hopkins family repairing the damage is too expensive right now. “I don’t know what we’ll do. We’ll just have to let God provide,” said Hopkins.

Emergency management said crews got most of the debris cleared away quickly.
