Helen Gurley Brown, Arkansas native and former editor in chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, died at age 90 Monday morning at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia, the Hearst Corporation said.

The publisher did not disclose a cause of death.

“It would be hard to overstate the importance to Hearst of her success with Cosmopolitan, or the value of the friendship many of us enjoyed with her. Helen was one of the world’s most recognized magazine editors and book authors, and a true pioneer for women in journalism–and beyond,” the Hearst statement read.

She was also the author of “Sex and the Single Girl.” Published in 1962, the book offered advice and anecdotes on why being single didn’t mean a woman had to be celibate.

Gurley Brown became editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan in 1965 and later left the magazine in 1997 to become editor in chief of Cosmopolitan’s 64 international editions.

Gurley Brown was born in Green Forest, Arkansas. Her family moved to Little Rock after her father Ira Marvin Gurley won an election to the state legislature.
