Perry D. Davis, 49, who Bentonville police say shot and killed his 44-year-old wife, Kelly, in their home Sunday, has been transferred to another hospital to be treated for an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, officials said.
Perry and Kelly Davis’ neighbors, Terry and Mike Rose, watched the incident from their backyard.
"It's just total disbelief," said Terry. "It’s like a horror movie."
They couple watched the scene until police told them to evacuate. The Roses have known Perry and Kelly Davis for five years. Terry said the couple had disputes sometimes, but she never would have expected it to go this far.
"[Perry] was such a friendly person,” Terry said. “I don't know if that was a show or what, but I had him in my home and never once did he ever get out of tune or anything with his voice."
Neighbors told 5NEWS money has triggered arguments between the couple in the past. Davis was a driver for Walmart for 21 years, a neighbor said.
Davis was taken to Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville Sunday night after a four-hour standoff with police ended at his home at 804 S.W. Ouachita Drive. He’s being treated at Washington Regional Medical Center and is under police supervision, Bentonville Police Chief Jon Simpson said.
Police said the incident began with a domestic disturbance that led to shots being fired about 4 p.m.
A neighbor said she’s been told that the man who lives in the home is an ‘everyday’ kind of guy.
“I don’t know him personally, but I’ve talked to some other neighbors who do, and they said he’s a really nice guy," said Amanda Villa. "He sits out on his front porch and makes conversation. It’s just really sad this is happening.”
The Bentonville police Bomb Squad and SWAT teams were called the scene, where authorities blocked off access to that area of the neighborhood. Some neighbors were evacuated.
“We’ve got an entire portion of this neighborhood that’s being held hostage right now,” Bentonville Police Chief Jon Simpson said earlier Sunday.
“Some people can’t leave their homes; some can’t return to their homes. We are going to work for as quick of a resolution as possible. But we recognize we have very strong limitations to do that, but we will continue to work on that,” he said.
The Rogers police department’s SWAT team was called in to assist.
The home is located about a mile and a half west of the Walmart home office.
Rhody Tate, an eyewitness, described the area near Walmart's corporate headquarters, where the deadly shooting took place, as quaint.
"It's a very nice neighborhood, a predominately wealthy, upper-wealthy community, not much crime, just a place to raise your kids," Tate said.
Police are at the hospital monitoring Davis. Kelly’s body has been taken to the state crime lab for an autopsy, police said.
