David William Johnson, 42, of Garfield, is being held without bond in the Benton County Jail in connection with rape, false imprisonment, and violation of a protection order.
Johnson was arrested in connection with kidnapping a woman in Garfield after a four-hour manhunt, according to Benton County Deputy Doug Gay.
"At 8 o'clock this morning we got a call from a woman in the Garfield area that indicated that she had been kidnapped overnight," Gay said.
Johnson was taken into custody at 14892 N. Mill St. near Garfield Elementary, which was locked down early Tuesday morning as deputies searched for the man.
Deputies responded to the residence on North Mill St. near the school but Johnson ran out the backdoor wearing only a pair of black shorts, according to deputies. Ten patrol units and a helicopter searched the area for Johnson.
Deputies served a protective order sought by the victim, Jennifer McElroy, against Johnson on Aug. 16, Deputy Gay said.
Garfield Principal Stephen Bowman locked the school down as a precautionary measure around 9:45 a.m. and all kids were safe, according to Rogers Public School Communications Director Ashley Siwiec. Classes continued as normal but no one was allowed to leave or enter the campus.
"Our main thing was to make sure that all of our students were safe and for the most part everything went off very smoothly," Bowman said. "A lot of our kids had no idea that any of this was even going on so we had school as usual."
Garfield Elementary is in the Rogers School District and located at 18432 Highway 62, also called Marshall Street in Rogers.
Deputies said Johnson has a history of being uncooperative with authorities but neighbor, Warren Finch said he did not feel threatened during the incident.
"It's a really quiet neighborhood; this is out of the ordinary,” Finch said. “This area is nice and quiet, there's nothing to be scared of."
At this time the relationship between McElroy and Johnson is unclear but police say they think the incident began as a domestic disturbance.
