Fort Smith firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free a driver from his vehicle after it struck a light pole and rolled several feet before smashing into a parked tractor trailer on Hwy 71 and Hwy 45 Thursday morning.

The accident involved a tractor trailer, an unoccupied white Chevrolet pickup and a red Dodge Challenger driven by Charles Fisher, 32, of Fort Smith, according to police.

Witnesses told police Fisher was speeding when he lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway and hit a traffic light pole. The vehicle then rolled several times before slamming into the parked Chevrolet and a tractor trailer on the side of the road, according to a police report.

Fisher was taken to Mercy Hospital and treated for serious injuries to his face including a broken jaw, teeth, and eye sockets. His injuries did not appear to be life threatening, according to police.

A construction worker near the accident was injured by debris from the traffic light pole. He was treated for a cut on his arm.

Police say Fisher got a ticket for reckless driving.

Crews responded to the accident at the northbound lane of the intersection of Hwy. 71 and Hwy. 45 near Fort Smith at approximately 7:35 a.m. Thursday.

The crash caused delays for drivers during early morning rush hour traffic.  Traffic had returned to a normal flow a few hours later, however.
