Have the Dallas Cowboys turned the corner?
They looked to have at least started to lean in the right direction in the season opening win at the Giants Wednesday night.
New York was celebrating it’s most recent Super Bowl win but it was the Cowboys who supplied the fireworks.
With the exception of a first half interception, Tony Romo was nearly flawless. Romo threw for more than 300 yards, completed 75 percent of his passes and had three touchdowns. Any other game that would have been the biggest story from a Cowboys win.
But running back DeMarco Murray stole the show.
The second year running back rushed for 131 yards and averaged 6.6 per attempt. Murray was on his way to have a huge year last season before going down with injury. Barring the same result, Murray could be a breakout rusher in the NFL this season. If the Cowboys offensive line can hold up (and cut down on the penalties), Murray could be on his way to being a top five back in the league. He’s got the ability to be that good.
I mentioned the penalties. There were times during the game I thought the Raiders were playing due to all the laundry on the field. The Cowboys have always had penalty issues with the offensive line but 13 calls going against Dallas is not what fans want to see.
The Cowboys defense looked good. DeMarcus Ware looked great. Three sacks and allowing less than 85 yards rushing is the recipe for a win any week of the season.
All things considered, it was a great start to the 2012 season for the Cowboys.
But let’s not jump the gun too quickly. The Giants are normally an average (if not sub par) squad until the calendar rolls to November. Eli Manning is a different quarterback late in the year but the Cowboys still took down the Giants, the defending world champions.
Wednesday night did three things.
- Showed that the Cowboys have potential to be a contender.
- Showed the Giants are worthless until the last month of the season.
- Scratched the surface for our obsession for the NFL.
We are just days away from the complete NFL coming back to us. Time to rejoice!
