A Memphis, Tenn., man is behind bars accused of setting his girlfriend’s dog on fire.

It happened early Wednesday morning at an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Webb Way Drive in Whitehaven, according to a report from WREG.

Police say 29-year-old Brian Gillum got mad at his girlfriend because she hid his car keys, grabbed the two-year-old miniature pinscher, poured lighter fluid on it and set it on fire.

Gillium’s girlfriend took the keys because she thought he was drunk and didn’t want him to drive, according to police. When police got to the house, they found the badly burned dog in the parking lot, unconscious.

Neighbors were nearly left speechless.

“Why would you do that to an animal? What did the dog have to do with it? Why would you kill the dog?” said Keiosha Thomas.

The dog was taken to an emergency animal hospital, but due to the extent of its injuries,  had to be put down.

Gillum has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty.
