Crews are battling a large brush fire south of Altus that began Wednesday morning.

Firefighters sprayed houses with water to keep them from catching fire, but no homes have been burned, according to Altus city officials.

Crews believe they have the fire about 50 percent contained, said Altus Mayor Larry Stacy. Stacy said someone may have been burning a brush pile that got out of control.

Downed trees from a tornado last year may have contributed to the spread of the fire off Arkansas Highway 186, Stacy said.

Fire sirens rang through the area at about 11 a.m.

Firefighters from Watalula, Coal Hill, Altus and Ozark were on the scene.
