Police arrested the last suspect in a Fayetteville residential burglary case from last November that left one suspect dead and the homeowner shot.

Steve Edward Crawford, 23, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of aggravated residential burglary and engaging in violent group activity. He remains in the Washington County Detention Center on $25,000 bond.

Police arrested a man Sept. 6 believed to be Crawford’s accomplice in the burglary. Darreon Matthews, 22, faces the same charges as Crawford.

Sgt. Craig Stout said Matthews was arrested after they matched DNA from a hat left at the scene. Stout said this case was a challenge.

"We were actively investigating it, everytime a new lead came up we would pursue those leads. We finally got to the point where we were able to bring it to a conclusion," Sgt. Craig Stout said.

Police said four black males entered a home on 232 N. Olive St. in Fayetteville in November 2011 with the intention of robbing the homeowner of drugs they believed to be inside.

A fourth suspect, David Richardson, who police said waited outside the residence, was arrested a month later. Richardson told police the men entered with an unloaded pistol. The homeowner, Cory Roberts, shot one of the intruders, then accidentally shot himself in the leg while fleeing out a window, according to police.

The suspect Roderick Cooper later died at Washington Regional Medical Center. The homeowner was treated for relatively superficial injuries, said Sgt. Craig Stout with the Fayetteville Police Department.

With one suspect dead and three in custody, police believe the full investigation has been completed, according to a preliminary arrest report.
