After years of planning and building the Washington County Animal shelter is less than a week from opening.
“Finally we did it,” adds Ron Wood, County Facilities Director.
With the county animal control having 24-hour access to the facility, stray animals won't be roaming for long.
Once animals are brought in they will get the care they need and will be put up for adoption.
“All of the animals will be spayed or neutered micro chipped, and vaccinated,” says Shelter Director, Shonna Harvey.
The new temporary home for the animals will have an education room for families to meet and learn how to care for their pet.
There's also a puppy room, 24 kennels, and a play room for the cats.
“We have a free roaming cat room, where the cats are going to be able to roam. They're not going to be in cages so they can interact with the public," adds Harvey.
But that's not all, a large back yard where dogs can run around.
The new 9,000 square foot facility will house more than 3,000 animals a year.
“I think it was something that was needed in the county," says Wood.
Harvey says there are no limits on the number of animals a person can have in the county.
She says a lot of animals are not cared for and are abandoned, and hopes this shelter will give animals a second chance for a good home.
“A huge benefit to the residents within the county. They will be able to have a place for their animals, we hope that it will reduce the amount of strays and abuse because we will be able to take their animals."
The new shelter will open its doors Monday, Sept. 24th.
