Just B.S. Sports Blog: Saturdays, Especially This One, Still Important

Big Games, Ranked Teams Smother First Weekend In October
Numbers

Most college football fans in the area have given up on the season already.

Arkansas’ struggles are well documented. Oklahoma gave a game away to Kansas State and the Sooner faithful have all but thrown in the towel at Landry Jones. Oklahoma State appears to be the same ole Oklahoma State by not winning big games.

I, myself, am more of a NFL fan. That’s no secret. But this weekend, I’ll be camped out watching the plethora of big games on Saturday.

You normally have to wait until New Year’s Day to see this many matchups of top 10 teams.

Not surprisingly the SEC will be the spotlight on Oct. 6. No. 4 LSU is at No. 10 Florida. Are the Gators back? Can LSU end its recent funk? But that isn’t even the best game involving the SEC East.

Georgia at South Carolina. No. 5 at No. 6. This is what most of the country will be waiting for. I’ve gone on record, in this blog no less, stating that I thought both the Bulldogs and Gamecocks were over rated. Georgia had been impressive all season long but gave up 44 points to Tennessee last week. Granted the Georgia offense scored 51. Aaron Murray finally looks like the quarterback everyone said he was three years ago.

Steve Spurrier hasn’t won many (if any) big games while the coach at South Carolina. Does he have the kind of quarterback play that can make the Gamecocks a legitimate national contender?

There are a lot of questions this weekend but one inquisition that we already know about is the fact West Virginia will score a lot of points. The question is can they stop anybody. Quarterback Geno Smith has thrown 20 touchdowns this season with zero interceptions. He has thrown for more points than 47 teams including Arkansas, Oklahoma and 20 other schools from BCS conferences.

Nebraska is at Ohio State as well. The two Big 10 schools are starting an hour after West Virginia-Texas and Georgia-South Carolina meaning only not many people will watch. With the exception of the three known Ohio State fans I’m aware of. (I’m sure there are more, just haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you yet. Lunch on Friday?)

Washington, fresh off an upset of Stanford, is in the poll at No. 23. The Huskies reward? A road game at No. 2 Oregon. Congratulations on being ranked for a week.

Sure, your favorite school is likely out of the national title picture (or bowl picture) but that doesn’t mean that the picture box isn’t worth turning on this Saturday.
