The Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter raised $132,000 at its Tailgate for Kids for the Arkansas-Kentucky football game.
Hundreds of Razorback fans spent the day tossing footballs, face painting and setting up couches and large TV screens at a parking lot on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., close to the University of Arkansas.
"We have to raise 80% of our operating budget every year to support the kids that we serve. We are going to serve over 500 children," said Steve Schotta, executive director of the NWA Children's Shelter.
It's an emergency shelter that's open daily,24 house.
"We have 48 kids there today, so we are the largest emergency shelter in the state, very unique, we have an onsite school," Schotta said.
Fans hope the hogs can keep the momentum going.
"I think there's some excitement because we finally won a game last week after those loses. Hopefully we get on a roll," Coby Sanders said.
"I love the underdog story,” said Lisa Inthavong. “They are great, they'll bounce back."
The smell of food surrounded the tailgaters, which is a part of football tradition.
Champion griller Drew McNatt of HogTide Bar-B-Que was cooking pork for the tailgaters.
"Here in the SEC, tailgating is more of a religion as well as the game itself. So there's always barbecue," McNatt said.
Former Razorback players also attended the fundraising event.
