$30,000 Worth of AC Units Stolen from Fort Smith Charity

The Community Services Clearinghouse in Fort Smith says someone stole several of their air conditioners overnight Tuesday.

Police are investigating after someone stole several thousands of dollars worth of air conditioning units from the Community Services Clearinghouse in Fort Smith overnight Tuesday.

“We're looking at about $30,000,” said Bob Curd, Assistant Director of the Community Services Clearinghouse.

Five air conditioning units are gone.

“They were just totally destroyed,” said Curd.

Curd found the mess when he came to work Wednesday morning.

“There's no doubt they knew exactly what they were doing,” he said.

Curd says they just purchased three new units last week.

“I had just basically wrote the check yesterday for those and when I went around the side of the building those were gone too,” he said.

The charity's backpack program provides food for about 2,000 kids each weekend. They feed between 300 and 400 families every month.

“It's very important that we keep the temperature as cool as we possibly can in the warehouse,” said Curd.

The stolen units should not affect their meal programs, Curd said.

“Fortunately enough you know we're not in the heat of the summer,” he said.

The clearing house is waiting on information from their insurance adjuster, according to Curd.

Police have not made any arrests. The theft is still under investigation.
