James Raines and Kellsey Raines baby battery arrest

A Fayetteville couple was arrested Tuesday after police say they repeatedly threw their baby on a couch and bed. The parents are also accused of stuffing the two-month-old girl’s face in the couch cushions.

James Raines, 47, and Kellsey Raines, 23, were arrested on suspicion of second degree battery. They remained in the Washington County Detention Center on Wednesday awaiting a bond hearing.

The child was transported to Children’s Hospital in Little Rock with two brain hemorrhages and an abrasion above the right eye, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police interviewed the parents, and Kellsey Raines admitted to throwing the infant on the bed and the couch several times, the report states. She would also stuff the baby’s face in the couch cushions to muffle the child’s crying, she told detectives.

James Raines also told police he tossed the baby onto the couch and bed on several occasions, out of frustration of the baby crying or Kellsey yelling at him, according to the report.

He would also hold the baby’s face against his chest to muffle the crying, the report states he told police.

Both parents were immediately arrested.
