The woman hospitalized following a school bus crash Monday remained in serious condition Tuesday at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Beverly Glasscock was driving a 1987 Dodge Ram pickup truck along East Huntsville Road in Fayetteville when she veered over the center line, according to witness statements in an accident report.
"She started drifting across the center line and the bus driver saw that and attempted to try to avoid the collision but was unable to do so," Sgt. Craig Stout said.
Roy Foster, driver of a Fayetteville school bus carrying three students from Vandergriff Elementary, unsuccessfully tried to avoid the collision, the report states.
Glasscock was rushed to Washington Regional Medical Center with at least a broken hip and arm, and facial lacerations, Sgt. Craig Stout said.
"At this point we don't consider them life-threatening injuries, but they were very severe," Stout said.
Two students were also hospitalized Monday at their parents' request. They were released Monday night from Washington Regional Medical Center, officials said.
Foster and school bus aide Marleen Wilson were uninjured during the wreck and returned to work Tuesday, said Alan Wilbourn, communications director for Fayetteville Public Schools.
One other Vandergriff student also was on the bus and was taken from the scene by a different bus.
The bus had no seat belts.
"We did have three students on the bus at the time of the accident. They appear to be OK, according to the EMTs on the scene," said Wilbourn.
"Apparently, we dodged what could have been a very serious situation this afternoon. Obviously, by the injuries and obvious damage to the bus and the pickup truck, it could have been much worse than it was," Wilbourn said.
The collision occurred at about 4 p.m. at the 6300 block of Huntsville Road, said Sgt Craig Stout with the Fayetteville Police Department.
Stout said police have not cited Glasscook and said her health is the priority.
"We don't necessarily know at this point whether there was some sort of impairment or a distraction of some kind, we just don't know that yet," Stout said.
Stout said once Glasscook is able to talk, police will interview her.
Police are waiting on Glasscook's blood and alcohol test. According to the police report, she was wearing a seat belt.
According to the police report the school bus damages total $15,000 and the damages to the pick-up truck total $7,500.
