Republicans gained control both chambers of the Arkansas Legislature for the first time since the post-Civil War Reconstruction, as Mark Moore, an independent, conceded to Republican Sue Scott in Benton County’s House District 95 race Thursday.

With about 800 votes yet to be counted Thursday afternoon in the House contest, Moore phoned Scott to concede the race. Scott was leading Moore 6,715 votes to 4,222 at the time.

The win gives Republicans 51 seats in the state House. Democrats lay claim to 48 seats, while the Green Party has one.

Republicans also captured control of the state Senate for the first time since Reconstruction.

The General Assembly next meets in January.
