Woman Claims Poll Worker Told Her Not to Vote on Issue

A Fort Smith voter says a poll worker told her not to vote on Issue 4 and Issue 5 on Election Day.

A Fort Smith voter says a poll worker told her not to vote on Issue 4 and Issue 5 on Election Day.

“I feel a little cheated,” said Jimmie Clark.

Clark voted at Grand Avenue Baptist Church on Tuesday. She says a poll worker gave her wrong information.

“She flipped it over to the back and she said you don't have to vote on these last two issues because they're taking them off the ballot,” said Clark.

Issue 5 is the Medical Marijuana Act. Voters shot it down by a narrow margin.

Clark says she did not vote on Issue 5 because the poll worker told her not to.

“One vote doesn't necessarily mean it would make a difference, but everyone's vote is important,” said Clark.

Clark wanted to vote on medical marijuana.

“I have volunteered in hospice the last 12 years and it wasn't an issue I took lightly,” she said.

The Sebastian County Election Commission told 5NEWS they had a poll worker at the church telling people not to vote on Issue 3 and Issue 4. Election Coordinator, Jerry Huff, says an official instructed the worker to stop. Huff told 5NEWS the worker stopped.

“I won't put it past the fact that maybe I misunderstood, but that's what I heard was the last two issues,” said Clark.

Clark plans to ask more questions next time.

The State Board of Election Commissioners says they train election officials from each county, and then they go back and train poll workers. Citizens can file a complaint about irregularities at election sites.
