A Springdale man was released from jail Sunday after police say he tried to stab his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.

Omar Martinez, 24, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of aggravated assault and residential burglary, both felonies. He was released from the Washington County Detention Center on $3,500 bond.

A woman called police early Sunday morning to report that Martinez, her ex-boyfriend, was beating on her door. When the woman’s boyfriend answered the door, Martinez pushed his way into the home, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

Martinez then went into the kitchen and grabbed a knife, the woman told police. He started chasing the woman’s boyfriend and trying to stab him, the report states.

Police said Martinez chased the man around the parking lot and back into the home, where the man “knocked (Martinez) out”. Martinez began screaming, broke an apartment window and ran off, according to the preliminary report.

Officers later located Martinez at his apartment and arrested him.

Martinez told police his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend threw him to the floor before Martinez grabbed the knife. He also said he broke the window because he heard the boyfriend hitting Martinez’s ex-girlfriend.
