“We drove two days, 12 hours a day down Interstate 40,” said LeRoy Thomas, a traveler.
Thomas drove from Las Vegas to Fort Smith to spend Thanksgiving with his parents. “There's a lot of truck traffic on Interstate 40, but traffic moves very well,” he said.
A TripAdvisor survey shows 38-percent of travelers plan to fly and 58-percent intend to drive this Thanksgiving.
Lucy Dooley will drive about two hours to be with family. “I think people need to be extra careful, take their time, make sure they're not using their cell phones, put them down,” she said.
According to the TripAdvisor survey more people will travel this Thanksgiving compared to last year.
“I'm really amazed at the volume of traffic compared to the last few years,” said Dooley.
According to AAA, gas in Northwest Arkansas averages about $3.20 a gallon. In Fort Smith gas averages about $3.16 a gallon, according to AAA. The prices are down about 30-cents from a month ago and about the same as they were at this time last year.
“It's a lot,” said Jim Lindsay, a driver. “Gas is high either way you know.”
“Gas prices were pretty expensive in Las Vegas, but once we got east like New Mexico they dropped about 40-cents a gallon,” said Thomas.
According to the TripAdvisor survey, half of travelers will head home on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
