A Fayetteville man was arrested Wednesday after police say he sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl.

William E. Estridge, 43, was arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in the Washington County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

State police notified the Fayetteville Police Department Nov. 30 of a call made to the state police’s Crimes Against Children Division. The caller alleged that a girl was being sexually assaulted by her relative’s neighbor, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

During a subsequent investigation, the alleged victim told police Estridge touched her inappropriately while giving her a bath last year. Estridge denied the accusation and said the girl was being coached what to tell the police, the report states.

Estridge eventually told police the victim pulled his hand against her while he was changing her diaper. Estridge said he often took care of the girl.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
