The suspect in a Fort Smith shooting and a woman who allegedly fled the area with him will both return to the city to face charges.
Quincy Haymer, Jr., 25, and Melanie Meashintubby have both waived extradition after being arrested Dec. 12 in Chicago, Ill., in connection with a Fort Smith shooting.
Haymer faces first degree battery and felon in possession of a firearm charges which carry a $100,000 bond. Meashintubby was initially arrested on a charge of obstructing governmental operations, but it was later amended to felony hindering apprehension.
Sebastian County deputies will travel to Chicago to bring the two back to Fort Smith.
Police began searching for Haymer, who was considered armed and dangerous, after he allegedly shot a man in a Fort Smith parking lot Monday, Dec. 10.
Haymer was known to have ties in Fort Smith, various locations in Sequoyah County, Okla., Oklahoma City, and Chicago, according to police.
Police responded to a shooting near Greenwood and Grand Avenue on just before 5 p.m.
Sherron Zanders, 28, was found in the AutoZone parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds, according to investigators.
Investigators believe the fight could have sparked over a woman. Haymer is dating Zanders’ ex-girlfriend, according to police. They believe the argument began at a nearby bank and carried over into the AutoZone parking lot.
Zanders groaned as paramedics treated him in the passenger seat of a black Cadillac. He went to a local hospital via ambulance. Police said Tuesday he is expected to survive.
“I was going through the stop sign and all the sudden I just heard a couple of gunshots, three or four actually,” said Jerry Miller, an eyewitness. “I looked over and seen this guy looked like he’s hoping across the road leading the car over there.”
Police blocked off a portion of the AutoZone parking lot. Investigators searched the surrounding area for clues.
“He got shot in the parking lot,” said Jordan Bare, an eyewitness. “The weird thing was we didn’t hear any squealing tires.”
