Police caught up to a registered sex offender they say illegally owned and sold a .50 caliber rifle.

James Andrew Crawley, 23, was arrested by Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies Thursday on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender and prohibited possession of a firearm.

Crawley pleaded guilty in 2009 to second degree felony sexual assault, making him ineligible to own a gun. Police said Crawley admitted to selling a black powered rifle in May to Mountain Man Pawn Shop in Fayetteville.

Police attempted to make contact in September with Crawley at his home at Springdale Inn, but he was not home. Three days later, detectives noticed Crawley had checked out of the hotel in the last few days, according to an arrest warrant affidavit from Washington County Circuit Court.

Crawley also missed his scheduled meeting with a probation officer, leaving law enforcement unable to locate him.

Deputies were eventually able to locate Crawley and arrested him this week. He remains in the Washington County Detention Center on more than $3,500 bond.
