A Fort Smith man is being held at the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center without bond after a more than four-hour standoff with police at an apartment complex.

Jerry Del Womack, 45, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and Terroristic Threatening Sunday night (Jan. 13).

Around 5 p.m., officers went to Womack’s apartment at Timberline Apartments at 5900 Kinkead Avenue to do a welfare check, according to a police report.

Womack’s ex-wife had called police, claiming he’d threatened to shoot his daughter. The daughter also told police that Womack had threatened to shoot her if she came to the apartment, the report states.

Womack told officers through the door that he was ‘armed and would shoot anyone that entered,’ according to the police report.

The man barricaded himself inside the apartment and fired several rounds from a .380 caliber gun. Police believe one of those rounds went through the window and struck another apartment building.

Surrounding apartments were evacuated as the Fort Smith SWAT team and negotiators arrived.

Shortly after 10 p.m., the man opened his door. SWAT members entered the apartment and convinced Womack to surrender.

However, when told to show his hands Womack did not comply, according to the report. An officer used a Taser on Womack and officers were then able to take him into custody.
