A Benton County Sheriff’s deputy has been fired after losing a shotgun he placed on the hood of his car.

Part-time Deputy Mark Heiner lost a custom Remington 870 shotgun following a Sheriff’s Office inventory meeting Wednesday night. After leaving the meeting, Heiner placed the gun on the hood of his car while loading other inventory into his vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Heiner then drove off, with the gun still on his hood. Authorities still have not located the shotgun.

Sheriff’s Office officials believe someone picked up the shotgun. Deputies searched the area in front of the Sheriff’s Office, but could not locate the missing property.

While picking up lost property is not a crime, knowingly keeping property the owner is looking for can fall under the category of theft by receiving.

Whoever has the missing gun can return it to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office without fear of repercussions. If the shotgun is ever sold or run across the database, the serial number will give it away as stolen merchandise, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The shotgun, worth $800 because of its modifications, has a pistol grip and collapsible stock, among other features.

Anyone with information about the missing shotgun is encouraged to contact the Benton County Sheriff’s Office at 479-271-1008.
