Some River Valley students got a lesson on how to call 911 from a cellphone in case of an emergency.

Students at Westwood Elementary in Greenwood learned when and how to dial for help, what to expect and why it's important Friday morning.

Since many people have given up their landline, cellphones are the primary home telephone for many.

With so many different options available, it can be tough for kids to figure out how to make a call or which icon to press.

Misty Gibson from Verizon Wireless, says it's important for parents to talk to their children about how to react in an emergency.

“Make sure that you role play with your children,” she said. “Make sure they know how to call 911 from your phone, and make sure they know your address, phone number and county they live in.”

Gibson says it's important for kids to know which county they live in because their nearest cellphone tower may be in a different one. This will help the 911 operator identify their location quicker.
