Bentonville School Board President Travis Riggs announced at Thursday’s board meeting he is stepping down from the seven-member panel. His last board meeting will be Feb. 19.

Riggs said it recently came to light that a state statute requires the board to shift its committee meetings from the daytime to 5 p.m. or later. He said the board has held daytime committee meetings starting at 11:30 a.m. throughout his 12 years on the panel.

However, the requirement that meetings be held at 5 p.m. or later creates conflicts in his family life and work schedule, Riggs said. It is easier for him to attend meetings over the lunch hour than in the evenings, he said. He owns Riggs and Associates, an accounting firm that keeps him busy during tax season, he said.

Riggs had not submitted a letter of resignation to Superintendent Michael Poore by noon on Friday (Jan. 25), a staff member said.

Riggs is serving a two-year term that expires in 2014. Board members do not receive a salary.

The board will interview applicants living in the zone that Riggs represents and select a replacement, he said.

The replacement will be eligible to run for election after Riggs’ term expires, he said.
